Development history
The IS-1 replaced the KV's tall hull with a compact, well-shaped design that carried thicker armour on less weight. Its 85 mm gun was no better than the T-34-85's, which made the whole point of a heavy tank doubtful, so production was cut short after roughly 210 vehicles once the 122 mm-armed IS-2 was ready. Those built fought in Ukraine and Poland in 1944, and the hull they proved served the Soviet Army in improved form for another two decades.
