Development history
Object 701 thickened the IS series armour to the point where the vehicle weighed sixty tonnes on a drivetrain designed for less. Production ran from 1947 to 1949 and stopped at roughly 250 vehicles after trials showed poor reliability, a cramped fighting compartment and mobility that could not keep up with the medium tanks it was meant to support. The gun was no better than the IS-2's. Most were shipped to garrisons in the Soviet Far East, some were dug in as fixed fortifications along the Chinese border, and the type was gone from active service in the 1950s. Survivors are rare; one is at Kubinka.
