Development history

Replacing the StuG III in tank destroyer battalions, the Jagdpanzer IV had a sharply sloped front and a silhouette barely two metres high. The later L/70 version carried the Panther's gun, but the extra weight over the nose wore out the front road wheels and made handling heavy.
