Development history

West Germany designed the Leopard for shoot-and-scoot defence of the North German Plain, accepting thin armour in exchange for a high power-to-weight ratio and the excellent L7 gun. Progressive marks added a welded turret, better fire control and thermal sights, and the design sold across NATO and beyond. Rebuilt Leopard 1A5 variants remain in front-line use decades later, including in Ukraine.
