Development history

Doctrine held that tank destroyers should be fast and lightly armoured, so the M10 traded protection for an open-topped turret and a 3-inch gun on a modified M4A2 hull. It worked well in ambush and as assault artillery but was vulnerable to infantry and mortar fire. British conversions with the 17-pounder became the Achilles.
