Development history
When the 76 mm-armed M10 proved inadequate against heavy German armour, the 90 mm anti-aircraft gun was adapted into a new open-topped turret on the M10 and later Sherman hulls. M36s arrived in Europe in autumn 1944 and made their mark in the Ardennes, where they were among the few vehicles capable of stopping King Tigers. The open turret remained a liability against airburst and infantry, but crews accepted it for the gun. M36s later fought in Korea and were still in Yugoslav service into the 2000s.
