Development history

The Ram used American M3 Lee mechanicals under a cast hull and a fully rotating turret of Canadian design, a considerable achievement for a country with no tank industry in 1939. By the time enough were built, Sherman production made standardisation the sensible choice, so Rams equipped Canadian units in Britain for training rather than combat. Their most significant service came as Ram Kangaroo armoured personnel carriers with turrets removed, carrying infantry in the 1944-45 battles in the Netherlands and Germany, and as the basis of the Sexton self-propelled gun.
