Development history
Named for Sergei Mironovich Kirov, the SMK cut the T-35 down from five turrets to two and introduced torsion-bar suspension. The single machine was sent to the Karelian Isthmus in December 1939, was mined on the Mannerheim Line and had to be recovered under fire. Its lessons, and those of its rival the T-100, pointed straight to the single-turret KV-1.
