Development history
When air raids crippled Alkett's StuG III lines in late 1943, Krupp mated the existing assault gun superstructure to the Panzer IV chassis. The result was slightly taller and heavier than the StuG III but mechanically identical to the Panzer IV, simplifying supply for units that already ran that chassis.
