Development history

The first German self-propelled heavy infantry gun was made by mounting a complete sIG 33 with wheels still attached onto a turretless Panzer I Ausf. B, with a high open shield that made the vehicle top-heavy and visible from a long way off. Thirty-eight were converted for the French campaign of 1940 and they served on into North Africa and Russia. The concept was sound even if the vehicle was not, and it produced the Grille and Brummbar.
