Development history
Introduced in early 1943, the SU-122 gave Soviet assault units a mobile heavy howitzer able to destroy bunkers and buildings with its large high-explosive shell. Against tanks it was poor: slow to load, with a low-velocity gun and a cramped fighting compartment. Experience led to the high-velocity SU-85 on the same hull, and the SU-122 was withdrawn from production after about a year, though it served through the 1943-44 offensives.
