Development history
Built at Omsk from 1954, the SU-122-54 put a 122 mm gun with a semi-automatic loading system into a low casemate on T-54 running gear. It was accurate and well protected but expensive, and the T-54 with the same calibre of firepower in a turret made it hard to justify. Fewer than eighty were completed before production stopped in 1956; survivors were converted to recovery and technical vehicles.
