Development history
The T48 was built in Indiana on an M3 half-track chassis with a 57 mm gun behind a shield, rejected by the US Army and shipped almost entirely to the Soviet Union. Renamed SU-57, it equipped light self-propelled artillery brigades, where its speed on roads suited pursuit and flank work; crews accepted the thin shield in exchange for mobility. A handful served on into 1945 with reconnaissance units.
