Development history
The SU-85 replaced the SU-122's howitzer with a high-velocity 85 mm gun, turning an assault vehicle into a tank hunter that could kill Panthers from the flank and Tigers at closer range. Low, quick and mechanically identical to the T-34, it equipped self-propelled artillery regiments from summer 1943. Once the T-34-85 fielded the same gun in a turret, the SU-85 lost its advantage and production shifted to the 100 mm-armed SU-100.
