Development history

The 57 mm ZIS-4 fired a lighter but much faster shell than the standard 76 mm, giving the best Soviet anti-armour performance of 1941. A first small batch equipped tank-hunting companies around Moscow; production restarted briefly in 1943 when heavier German armour appeared. Poor high-explosive performance and barrel wear kept numbers small, and the 85 mm gun soon made the type redundant.
