Development history

Licence production of the T-54A began at Labedy in 1956 and continued into T-55 variants, making Poland one of only three Warsaw Pact states building the family. Polish-built vehicles served the Polish People's Army in large numbers and were also exported. Poland developed its own rebuild and modernisation work on the fleet rather than simply following Soviet packages, experience that later produced the Merida programme. Examples are preserved at Poznan and at the Polish Army Museum.
