Development history
Poland began assembling T-72M kits in 1982 and moved to full local manufacture of the T-72M1, building roughly 1,600 vehicles for its own army and for export. Polish crews inherited the family's strengths - a low silhouette, a powerful 125 mm gun and an autoloader - along with its weaknesses, notably ammunition stowed in the crew compartment. Polish industry responded with the Jaguar modernisation studies of the late 1980s, adding new fire control, ERAWA reactive armour and a laser warning system, and those studies became the PT-91 Twardy. Poland's T-72M1s remained in service and reserve for decades, and a large number were transferred to Ukraine in 2022.
