Development history
Developed as the T-72BU, the design was renamed T-90 on acceptance in 1992 to distance it from the T-72's reputation after the Gulf War. It combined the T-72B hull and autoloader with the T-80U's fire control, Kontakt-5 reactive armour and the Shtora infra-red jamming system. Listed here as the closing entry of the Soviet line rather than a Cold War service tank, in the same way as the Polish PT-91.
