Development history
Taiwan in the 1970s had ageing American armour, no domestic tank industry and an urgent need for vehicles that could operate on the island's narrow roads and soft ground. The Ordnance Readiness Development Center's answer was to marry two American vehicles already in the inventory: the hull of the M42 Duster anti-aircraft vehicle, itself based on the M41, and the complete turret of the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank. Around fifty were converted. The Type 64 was never intended as a front-line tank against Chinese armour but as a mobile gun for infantry support and counter-landing work. It was retired during the 1990s as CM-11 and M60A3 tanks arrived. A handful survive in Taiwanese military parks.
