Development history
When 152 mm gun-howitzers ran short, Chelyabinsk fitted the plentiful 122 mm A-19 corps gun into the ISU hull instead, giving flatter trajectory, better range and more ammunition than the ISU-152 at the cost of a smaller high-explosive shell. Later vehicles received the faster-loading D-25S with a muzzle brake, designated ISU-122S. Around 3,130 were built, they fought from Byelorussia to Berlin, and they stayed in Soviet and allied service into the 1960s.
