Development history
Alexander Morozov began Object 430 at Kharkiv in the mid-1950s as a clean-sheet medium tank built around a flat opposed-piston diesel, small road wheels and a very low hull. Trials from 1957 showed it was no better armed than the T-55 already in production, so it was not adopted, but almost every feature - the engine layout, the running gear, the compact fighting compartment - carried through Object 432 into the T-64 and from there into the whole later Soviet line.
