Development history
The T-64 introduced almost everything that defines a modern tank - ceramic composite armour, a carousel autoloader that removed the loader, and a compact opposed-piston engine - and was kept from export because of it. The engine and suspension were troublesome throughout its life, so the cheaper T-72 was created for mass production and export while the T-64 equipped elite Soviet formations. Ukrainian T-64BV and Bulat rebuilds remain in front-line use.
